Introduction

The Department of History was founded on 18 Augustus 1993 under the Faculty of Arts and Letters.  Consisting of Sub-Departments of Ancient History, Medieval History, Turkish History in General, Early Modern History, Modern History, History of Ottoman Institutions and Civilization and the History of the Turkish Republic and assisted by 10 professors, 7 Associate professors, 3 Doctors, 3 Doctor Assistants, 2 Research assistants and 3 lecturers, it has a rich academic portfolio and a strong tradition. The ultimate goal of the Department is to conduct an active education.

As an academic institution the target of the Department of History is to bring up individuals capable of making scientific researches as well as to contribute to the development of historiography and the discipline of History in Turkey and in the World. It promotes working on joint projects and adopts a modern concept of history open to novelties and dissenting views. The Department of History aspires to contribute to the scientific advancement of its country and to elevate its scientific level by means of the researches to be made by it well educated academic staff.

For the Spring Semester of 2018-2019, the Department of History had 357 students in formal (regular) education, whereas this figure was 393 for Secondary (Evening) Education.

The students of the Department of History, in accordance with their degree of performance, could be admitted to double major programs in the departments of Turkish Language and Literature, Comparative Literature, Public Administration, Political Science, International Relations, Theology and Tourim Management. 

The History Department does also offer post-graduate education in Master's Degree and Ph.D. programs coordinated by the Institute of Social Sciences. The number of the graduate students enrolled at Masters Degree programs for the Spring Semester of 2018-2019 counted 44 for the Sub-departments of Early Modern, Modern and Republican Turkish History.  This number stood at 11 for doctoral students. 

 

Program Teaching Objectives

The Department of History, which aims to contribute to the quality of life of the society by producing information at the universal level within the framework of contemporary education, aims to raise historians in line with the mission it has determined.

For this purpose, by considering the 2013-2017 Strategic Plan, Field Competencies, FEDEK Outputs of our University, Teaching Objectives and Teaching Strategies were determined to achieve these teaching objectives.

 

Teaching Objectives of Our Department:

- gaining the ability to understand basic historical information,

- Ensuring the learning of the sources of history discipline including basic and current research results,

- teaching research methods and techniques related to historiography,

- understanding the importance of the multidisciplinary approach in history studies,

- gaining awareness of learning at least one source language required for historical research,

- ensuring that the technological developments of the age are harmoniously used in historical research and teaching techniques,

- developing an attitude for continuous research and reading with the acquired history consciousness.

 

Student Admission

Our department accepts students for the undergraduate program with a central examination conducted by ÖSYM (Student Selection and Placement Center). During the placement process, YKS scores of candidates, preferences of higher education programs, quotas and conditions of these programs are taken into consideration. The final registrations of the candidates who are placed by ÖSYM with the central procedure are made by the Student Affairs Registration Service within the Rectorate within the principles and principles announced by ÖSYM and the Rector's Office. Lateral / Vertical Transfer and Double Major / Minor

Criteria related to the admission of students by lateral and vertical transfer, double major and minor applications, and the evaluation of the courses taken in the programs of other institutions and institutions are subject to the decisions of the Rectorate of Eskişehir Osmangazi University.

Assessment and Evaluation

1.5.1 Lesson success of students of our department is evaluated with one mid-term and one final exam. Moreover, if the lecturer of lesson realize the necessity, additional exam applications with different methods can be done such as homework or presentation.

Attendance to lessons is compulsory and is determined as % 70. Students who are not done requirement of attendance to lesson can not enter the final exam of that lesson even if the student has a right and valid reason.

Success of student is determined with the mid-term and final exam marks and also if available additional exams marks such as homework and presentation together. Mid-term and final exam’s marks are not determined less than % 30 and more than % 60. At the result of final evaluation, letter grades –shown at below- are determined by the lecturer of every lesson according the class average.
